Crisis Support Outreach

In the aftermath of a major tragedy, communities often come together to support those affected while facing grief, uncertainty, and overwhelming emotions. During these difficult moments, the presence of a therapy dog can offer comfort, companionship, and a way to connect with others.

4 Pawz Strong is a nonprofit organization that has occasionally brought therapy dogs and volunteer handlers to communities affected by traumatic events. Following tragedies such as school shootings, devastating accidents, and other community-wide losses. In exceptional circumstances, a small team of volunteers may be able to provide temporary, on-site support.

Providing Comfort When Communities Need It Most

The days following a tragedy can be especially difficult for the people and organizations affected. Students, families, educators, first responders, and community members may be trying to process what happened while navigating unfamiliar circumstances.

Therapy dogs can offer a quiet, reassuring presence during this time. Some people may appreciate sitting quietly with a dog, while others may welcome an opportunity to interact, talk, or simply spend a few moments away from the stress surrounding them.

These interactions can complement the work of counselors, crisis response professionals, and community support organizations by providing another source of comfort and connection.

Bringing Therapy Dogs Directly to Affected Communities

When a community is facing the immediate effects of a tragedy, having therapy dogs available in familiar, accessible spaces can give people an opportunity to find comfort when they need it.

Depending on the circumstances, therapy dog teams may visit schools, community gathering spaces, or other locations where affected individuals can spend time with the dogs. These visits can provide support for people returning to daily activities, gathering with others, or coping with the emotional impact of an event.

4 Pawz Strong does not maintain a dedicated crisis-response team. These occasional outreach efforts rely on a small group of volunteers and suitable therapy dogs. As a result, opportunities to provide this support are very limited and must be considered individually.

Experience Responding to Tragedy

4 Pawz Strong has provided therapy dog outreach following major tragedies, including the shootings at Oxford High School and Michigan State University.

Following the tragedy in Oxford, therapy dog teams spent time with members of the school community over a two-week period. Dogs were also brought to Michigan State University to provide comfort and companionship to students following the campus shooting.

These experiences have reinforced the importance of being present, offering people opportunities to connect, and recognizing that everyone responds to difficult circumstances differently.
